RATIONALE The World Environment and Island Institute (WEI) of JNU, in cooperation with I-20 committee of World Association for Island Studies, University of Tasmania of AU, Suffolk University and East Asian Program of Syracuse University of USA, Rouen University of France, Hokkaido University of Japan , Offers 4 weeks Summer school from July 25 to August 20, 2011 collaboratively at beautiful Jeju Island of UNESCO Triple Crown Island : Jeju Halla Biosphere Reserve of 2002, Jeju Volcanic Island Lava Tubes of 2007 and Jeju-Geo Park,of 2010, which will be developed as a 10full time MASTER of World Environment and Island Studies from July of 2012. The WEII was founded in 2010 by Ko Chang Hoon at Jeju National University, in cooperation with three distinguished professors Maurice Strong, Robert Martin Lees, Kwaak Young Hoon and 8 faculty members of JNU supported by President of JNU, Hyang-jin Huh. The program is accredited by the Jeju National University, which also issues the Certificate Diplomas ( Master Diplomas in 2012). All courses are taught in English by leading specialists in their field from around the world, including Maurice Strong, founder of the academic discipline of World Environment Studies. The WEI Summer School is designed to provide students with academic competence to understand aspects of Climate Change, Marine Tourism and UNESCO Earth Heritage in an Age of World Environment . It also develops curricula tracks related to Peace Education, Culture of Peace and practical skills for promoting methods of Conflict Resolution management as a leader in his or her living community. Following the main principles and recommendations of the UN Resolution A/RES/53/243 : Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace ( October 6th 1999) . We apply a Coordinated IT Approach to WEISS for the JNU Environmental Program for Successful Establishment of World Environment University WEU at Jeju Islandsuggested by Mr. Derek Jaeger¡¯s idea of Jeju Web Dialogue (www.ourjeju.com). IT and Tourism: Environmentally-responsible tourism programs, promotion, marketing of artistic and cultural events, connections with existing online ecotourism social groups and organizations.
PROGRAMS and DEGREE The programs consist of 9courses of 4 tracks will be offered, with each student expected to take two or three courses. Each course will be team-taught by 5 faculty members (one instructor cover 6-12hours lecturing in one week through Monday to Thursday). Classes will meet on the Jeju National University (JNU), which will also validate the credits. Instructors will be housed in the Hawaii hotel of downtown in Jeju city or International Guest House at campus of Jeju National University. Courses would be taught in 4 week modules - around 45 hours lecturing including 3 hours in participation in the 11th Peace Island Forum. We also provide Cultural Tour and Jeju Geo-park program for foreign students. The Summer School will run for 4 weeks, from July 25 to August 20, 2011including participation in Research and Cultural Trip during WEISS, participation in Global Peace Bultuk Tribunal of 11th Peace Island Forum (July 30th of 2011) as participants in this events, exercises, group activities, excursions, selflibrary research and writing papers. CERTIFICATES, DIPLOMAS & DEGREES Those who complete 4 weeks of courses obtain an Advanced Certificate in World Environment and Island Studies from the WEI of JNU. It is possible to take individual courses, lasting one semester each from JNU. It will also be possible to study part time over 23 years. Students who complete two courses among 4 tracks within 4 weeks in summer school, can not only receive a certificate of completion, but will also qualifyto attend a Master Course of Advanced and Collaborative Studies in World Environment and Island Studies form Jeju National University. (It will be possible for them to transfer to Master Course of World Environment University if it starts in July of 2012, as planned.) If they complete the full program of 10 months of courses and write a thesis, they willobtain a Master Course of Advanced and Collaborative Studies in World Environment and Island Studies from Jeju National University, worth 40 credits according to the Korean Credit Transfer System (KCTS). One KCTS corresponds to 45 hours of study (in class and self-study). An MCACS differs from a Master of Arts (MA) program, which typically lasts two years, requires 40 KCTS and is normally accepted as a basis for continuing with a Ph.D. program.
LOCATION: The JNU of Jeju Island, founded in 1952, one of representative national universities in South Korea. It has about 11,000 students and over 400 faculty members. The university library has over 1 million books. Jeju Island is a famous tourist destination island of just under 600,000 inhabitants, with a vibrant culture, located at center of East Asia where East meets West.
INTENDED AUDIENCE: The program is addressed to students from any discipline interested in world environment, marine tourism, culture of peace , peace education and global leadership, including NGO members, government officials, international civil servants, teachers, journalists, social workers, lawyers, officers, psychologists, artists. A first university degree (bachelors or equivalent) is required , or comparable professional experience. COSTS: COSTS: Tuition: 1,500 USD (500 USD per course). We can apply a 20% discount to students who register in WEISS by Aril 8, 2011, because Jeju Special Self-Governing Province partially subsidizes this program. Dormitory fee: two person¡¯s sharing one room per night : 20 USD. So it mounts 500 USD per room for 25 nights ( 20 USD * 25 nights = 500 USD). If two person share one room, his (or her) payment will be 250 USD : 2 USD per meal at dormitory restaurant participation in the 11th PIBF: 150 USD; Friday tour fee: 3 times $40 =120 USD). So, if you register FOR three courses in WEISS, you pay 1,770 USD (1500 USD +150 USD conference fee + Friday Tour 120 USD). If you register in WEISS by April 15, we can discount around 15 % of total amount (1,500 USD only). If somebody will participate in the 11th PIBF only, she or he pays 120 USD to us as registration fee in it. If somebody will participate one week in the WEISS partially, she or he pays 400 USD per week. We estimate that 10,000,000 Korean won (currently about 8,000 US dollars) will be the tuition for 10 months of study, including thesis advisement in the 2012 Master program. Meals, health insurance and travel costs, and accommodationare extra.
WHEN TO APPLY: WEISS has a rolling admission policy. You can apply to our summer school from February 11 on ,and if you qualify and we have space left, you will be admitted. You can stay 3 months usually with status of no visa.
