*이 노래가 나오게 된 경위가 무척 재밌습니다. John의 친구인 Pete Shotton에 의하면, 어느날 John은 자기가 졸업한 학교인 Quarry Bank의 한 학생으로부터 편지를 받았습니다. 편지에는 이런 얘기가 적혀 있었습니다. 자기 학교의 문학 선생님이 수업 시간에 비틀즈 노래를 틀어 주고 학생들에게 돌아가면서 가사를 분석하게 시키고 비틀즈가 말하려는 바가 무엇인지에 대한 자기의 해석을 들려 주곤 한다는 겁니다. 그 학교 교장 선생님이 John의 재학 당시 John에게 "무얼해도 실패할 것"이라고 말했던 것을 생각하면 아이러니컬한 일이 아닐 수 없지요. 이것이 바로 "I Am the Walrus"의 가사가 쓰여진 계기가 되었습니다. John은 어릴 적에 부르던 "Yellow matter custard, green slop pie, all mixed together with a dead dog's eye.."로 시작하는 노래를 기억해 내고 (물론 아무 뜻도 없는) 그리고 억지로 먹어야 했던 맛없는 semolina(푸딩의 일종), 고양이밥으로 잘 썼던 pilchard(정어리 비슷한 거) 등과 조합해서 "I Am the Walrus"가사를 만들어 냈다고 합니다. 그리고는 웃으며 이렇게 말했다고 해요. "그 자식들한테 이것도 한 번 해석해 보라고 해."
