The figure broke down to 75 for the Army, 16 for the Navy and six for the Air Force, according to the report. The comparable figure stood at 82 in 2010, 81 in 2009, 75 in 2008, 80 in 2007 and 77 in 2006.
As of May 31 this year, 26 suicides were reported, it said. Ministry officials said the suicides were mostly caused by self-centered mindedness and impatience among soldiers, who had difficulty getting familiar with the military.
Some argue that it is wrong to regard personal issues as the sole cause of the problem, according to reports. Assaults and abuses still remain in some military units, despite the government’s efforts to eradicate them, they say.
