I'm in Korea and I give my personal view to the viewers and critics of the Western world. Cloud Atlas is a something to enjoy watching. But it can not be rated highly to the viewers in the East who have read the novel before the movie. Clould Atlas concentrates it's energy to express the mystic beauty of incarnation. This may appeal you very much. But it don't to us. We are already familiar to the concept of incarnation. We have so many legends and stories with structure of incarnation. We don't need to learn about incarnation by watching Cloud Atlas. Of course, we do appreciate that kind of stories because they can still touch us. Any time, anywhere, it is the most important what story to tell and how the strory be told. Do Cloud Atlas impress Korean viewers who have read the novel by David Mitchell before the movie? Answer is No. Viewers like me soon get disappointed watching the movie and finding out how much the movie cut out from the original novel. I felt weird in many parts thinking like "Why does he or she do that at this moment? Why? How? Where are the missing parts? Somebody tell me what the hell is going on?" Too much abridgment is the major bad. Back to movie. The directors effort to describe the incarnation and link to the another life. However, this kind of style is already done by many directors. The Hours, starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore. The Hours is the one of the great work with the very same structure of Cloud Atlas. We can fully enjoy each three stories and one whole story. Director Stephen Daldry definitely did the good job. Do Cloud Atlas make us fully enjoy each six stories and one whole story, as good as The Hours? I say Daldry is far much better. The directors of Cloud Atlas has just nailed descrbing what's in the story board to the film. That is all. To me, the concept and beauty of incarnation is nothing new, and too much abridged version of stories can not make me impressed. Simply, I can not rate it good. The film can be a kind of "Dummy's guide to understand Clould Atlas". However, it can never be an "Advanced interpretation of Cloud Atlas". |
