Putting problems plague Pak
Veteran has struggled since finger injury last year.

EAST CORNING -- Se Ri Pak has already made more money in seven tournaments on the LPGA Tour this year than she made all of last season. If she can straighten out her Saturday short-game snafus, she stands to secure a little more here today.

Pak, playing in her first-ever LPGA Corning Classic, shot a disappointing third-round 1-over-par 73 and begins her final round at 10:16 this morning 10 strokes behind leader Jeong Jang.

A big comeback, unlikely as it seems, would be nice. But Pak would settle for putting improvement.

"On the last hole, I had a perfect tee shot, and a perfect second shot," said Pak. "My 8-iron in, I thought it was perfect."

It wasnt. In fact, it flew the green and buried itself in the far, highest rough. Her chip up fizzled after just a few feet. A 15-foot putt pulled left and short. And finally, a 2-foot putt had mercy.

"Ive had five or six of those. Fifteen-foot putts for chances at birdie," she said, shaking her head, confused. "But I miss. There has to be something to this."

It could be rust.

After establishing herself as a premier player on the tour since 1998, she backslid in 2005, primarily because of a fluke injury to her left middle finger. It took one bad shot from the rough to wreck three to four months.

"It was a little tiny muscle," she said, holding her finger politely to the side. "I hurt it after the British Open. It swelled way up. Its fine now, though."

As a result of the setback, Pak went from a golfer who had won an LPGA tournament in every year but one since 1998, to someone who couldnt crack the top 27 last season. After 20 top-10 finishes in 2003, when her earnings were more than $1.6 million, Pak earned $62,628 in 2005 (shes made $84,477 this year). A year ago, she made the cut only eight of 16 times out.

Its part of the reason she decided to play Corning for the first time this year.

"It feels really good here. I know this course is tight, with nice greens," she said.

Pak is looking for a strong finish today, something she can build on after a couple recent strong outings. She tied for ninth on April 30 at the Ginn Clubs & Resorts Open, then finished 25th on May 14 at the Michelob Ultra Open.

"She hit it good today," said Joe Connolly, caddying for Pak just this weekend. Connolly normally caddies for Michele Redman. "She just didnt make any putts. She had maybe two stray tee shots.

"You can stand there and say, Be patient, be patient, only so many times before it gets old," he said.

Pak said next week shell team with a new caddie for the first time. Once she learns his name, she hopes her game gets back to some semblance of normalcy.

"His name is T.J. I met him a few weeks ago," she said, laughing because she doesnt yet know his last name. Details, details. Her caddie is important, but not critical to how she plays, she added.

"Im not the kind of person to blame my caddie, or ask them a lot out on the course," Pak said, "but I work a lot off the course with him.

"We communicate on the course, too, but not 100 percent. I just want to make sure he knows what Im doing on the golf course."
