Charting social mores and behaviour from the sexual revolution of the 1960s to the present day, this rather dreary Channel Four documentary focuses on a handful of mature-age homosexuals.
Its aim is to offer some perspective on the period in which homosexuality moved from being a criminal offence to being recognised in law through civil partnerships. The film notes that more than 15,000 gay couples have married since the civil partnership law was introduced in England in 2005.
Andy Wells' film follows long-time couple Alan and Jimmy as they prepare for their marriage and Roger, an openly gay former headmaster, living with the much younger Ian. Clive, after a long marriage and three children, has only recently come out to his family. The film depicts a range of preferences, from dedicated monogamy to rampant promiscuity, but also feels the need to spice things up with an absurd range of juxtapositions: sex scenes intercut with gym workouts, strip-club scenes intercut with curtain-shopping excursions.
It plays up the sex and suburbia angle to a silly extreme. Clive's bragging behaviour and post-coital interviews seem especially absurd. Gay or straight, someone so self-absorbed and preoccupied with himself is a worry....
