한편 벳과 티나는 인공수정을 통해 아이를 가지려고 노력 중이며 프로 테니스 선수인 데이나는 레즈비언이라는 사실을 사회에 숨긴 채 여자친구를 만들고자 노력 중. 양성연애자인 앨리스 역시 여자친구, 혹은 남자친구를 만들고자 애쓰는 중이다. 또한 구속 받기 싫어하는 쉐인은 매일밤 다른 여자와의 잠자리를 찾아 헤맨다. 그리고 알코올중독증세를 보이는, 벳의 이복언니, 킷은 술을 멀리하며 동생 벳과의 사이를 진전시키고자 노력 중이다.
Pilot에서는 벳-티나의 관계와 마리나-제니-팀의 삼각관계를 깊이 다룬 감이 있긴 하지만, 이 양분화된 관계 속에도 보다 깊은 갈등구조를 넣음으로써 완성도를 높이고 있다.
오래된 연인인 벳과 티나 커플의, 인공수정 과정에서 생기는 몇 가지 미묘한 감정의 차이를 최대한 파고듦으로써 전체적인 단조로움으로부터 스토리라인을 훨씬 역동적으로 그려낸다. 작가는 현명하게도 수정이라는 하나의 소재로 벳과 티나의 관계를 다른 측면에서 조명한다.
