Desserts are served hot, cold or even frozen. Some desserts are as simple as a few slices of fresh fruit, while others take a day or more to prepare. Many traditional desserts include honey, while many newer ones often include chocolate.New desserts are invented every day. The origins of some desserts, such as ice cream, are mixed up in history and legend.Among the legends about ice cream are stories about Roman emperors. During the summer, these emperors supposedly had teams of slaves who would run from the mountains to Rome carrying snow. When the snow arrived, it would be flavored with fruit syrups and served to the emperor.Water ices - a from of ice cream - have been popular throughout Asia for thousands of years. Traders and adventurers brought recipes for water ices to Europe from the East. Some stories say that Marco Polo(1254-1324) introduced a version of ice cream to Italy, but there is no real evidence for this. Another story says that when the Italian Catherine de Medici (1519-1589) married Henry II recipes for Italian ice creams. A dish fit for a queen made ice cream fashionable throughout Europe.But the history of ice cream starts mush earlier. During Chinas Tang period(618-907 AD), the Chinese began to create ice cream from buffalo milk and goat milk, flavored with spices. How the idea of this dessert spread or whether it was simply invented elsewhere may never be known. |
